2016A University of Mary Washington poll of Virginia voters’ preferences for president released this week gives Hillary Clinton a commanding lead among Democrats and Ben Carson a five-point lead on the field among Republicans.

Clinton was at 63 percent among likely Virginia Democratic voters, with Bernie Sanders at 27 percent, and Martin O’Malley well back at 5 percent.

On the GOP side, Carson was at 29 percent, with Donald Trump, in the lead in many national polls, in second in Virginia at 24 percent.

Marco Rubio is well back in third place at 11 percent, with Ted Cruz fourth at 10 percent. Jeb Bush and Carly Fiorina are tied for fourth at 5 percent.

The poll has Carson beating both Clinton and Sanders in head-to-head general-election matchups, 44-39 over Clinton and 42-33 over Sanders.
