Virginia taxpayers could be on the hook for just under $100 million for the economic-development project that landed a global aerospace company to Pittsylvania County.

Avio USA Inc., a subsidiary of global aerospace company Avio S.p.A, announced Monday that it will invest $500 million to build an 860,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in the Southern Virginia Multimodal Park in Hurt, a town of 1,269 residents located between Lynchburg and Danville.

The new facility will produce solid rocket motors for defense, tactile propulsion, missile systems, and the commercial space sectors.

The facility will bring more than 1,000 new jobs to Southside Virginia, at the bargest-basement price of $100,000 per job.

Some folks get upset about other folks being on welfare; nobody complains about this kind of corporate welfare.

“Avio USA’s historic investment in Pittsylvania County represents a major win for Southern Virginia, for the Commonwealth, and for our national security,” Gov. Abigail Spanberger said in a statement. “By investing more than $500 million in Pittsylvania County, Avio USA will create over 1,000 high‑quality jobs and revitalize domestic production of critical defense technologies. Virginia is proud to support this project and the talented workforce that powers the Commonwealth’s resilient defense industrial base.”
