What is it about an old building that so enraptures us? Providing only a snapshot view of distant lives and moments, it leaves us to fill in the gaps between crumbling walls and peeling paint.
Nicole Martorana’s What Remains of You and Me is a photographic and mixed media collection of these broken pieces. It examines the stories behind place, questions our impressions of time, and challenges our perceptions of home. But first and foremost, it is a glimpse into what was and what might have been.
Exhibit opens on July 6, 2012 (5-8 pm). On display through July at Arts Council of the Valley, 311 S. Main St., Harrisonburg.
Martorana is a photographer, filmmaker, and writer. She grew up in Harrisonburg, Virginia and has spent much of her life traveling in the US and abroad. No matter where she goes, she always finds herself drawn to places in disrepair, imagining the greater stories behind them.
Martorana graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Media Arts & Design. She has developed and led photography workshops and exhibitions for students in the Virginia Residential Governor’s School for the Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts and the Study English Language in America program at Eastern Mennonite University. She often gives presentations and guest lectures about her experiences using photography as a vehicle for cross-cultural exploration and dialogue.
Martorana specializes in street and travel photography, and her previous exhibits have focused on stolen moments, cultural identity, and the details that make up our broader life experience.
