Paralympic athlete Josh Sundquist will be the keynote speaker 7 p.m. Monday, March 28 to kick off the seventh annual Disability Awareness Week at James Madison University. The week focuses on raising awareness about inclusion and equity.
The Harrisonburg native strives to use humor in order to combat preconceived notions about disability and encourages audiences to reassess their perception of disability. Sundquist’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Wilson Hall Auditorium. On Wednesday, March 30, the Adapted Sports Showcase will feature adapted sports like wheelchair basketball and goalball. The event will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. in Godwin Gym.
Other events, both on Thursday, March 31, include a Disability Awareness Week Faculty Open House and cooking demonstration by D-Hall’s Chef Rob. The open house will run from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 1202 of the Student Success Center. Chef Rob will provide two demonstrations on how to cook simple and affordable meals with adaptive cooking tools. Due to a limited number of seats, RSVPs are requested at [email protected]. Session one will begin at 2:30 p.m. and session two will begin at 3:30 p.m., both at D-Hall Entrance 6.
