One dead in Interstate 81 crash in Rockingham County

interstate 81Virginia State Police Trooper H.L. Campbell is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash in Rockingham County. The crash occurred Thursday at 3:09 a.m. on Interstate 81 at the 253 mile marker.

A tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-81 when it rear-ended a 2004 Jeep Wrangler. The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to run off the right side of the highway. The Jeep then overturned.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Letroy D. Sims, 40, of Spartanburg, S.C., was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Jeep, Hoa Van Dau, 59, of New Market, Va., died at the scene.

Sims was charged with reckless driving.
