One dead in Augusta County car accident

augusta countyVirginia State Police Trooper J.C. Crabtree is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred Feb. 4 at 1:23 p.m. at the intersection of Route 608 and Route 651.

A 2002 Mercury Sable was traveling north on Route 651. The Sable pulled out from the stop sign and into the path of a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck headed east on Route 608. The pickup truck was unable to avoid striking the Mercury and struck the sedan in the driver’s side.

The driver of the Mercury, John A. McElfresh, 89, of Fishersville, Va., was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital Feb. 6, 2016. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the pickup truck, James H. Strickler, 71, of Stuarts Draft, Va., was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.
