virginia baseballThe No. 10 Virginia baseball team (11-5, 2-1 ACC) dropped the series finale to Duke (9-7, 1-2 ACC), 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

Duke starter Brian McAfee (2-1), who threw seven shutout innings against the Cavaliers in 2015 as a starter for Cornell, pitched a shutout with three strikeouts while scattering five hits.

“That is two years in a row that kid has pitched really well against us,” UVA head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “You have to tip your cap to him. He did not have a 2-0 count all game long, threw four pitches for strikes and did what a veteran should do. Every weekend in this league teams are good and Duke did not go away and played a fantastic game today.”

The Blue Devils scored a pair of runs in the first inning off of a passed ball and a sacrifice fly and added an insurance run in the seventh on an Evan Dougherty RBI single that scored Griffin Conine.

Tommy Doyle (So., Vienna, Va.) pitched a quality start, allowing three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work, but took the loss (1-2). Jack Roberts (R-So., Richmond, Va.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

The Cavaliers had five hits in the game with two coming from Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.), while Ernie Clement (So., Rochester, N.Y.), Ryan Karstetter (Fr., State College, Pa.) and Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) each had one.

Next up, the Cavaliers host Towson in a non-conference two-game series March 15-16. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
