New sections of Route 280 in Rockingham County open Monday evening

Chris Graham

road-work-headerTwo new sections of Route 280 in Rockingham County are expected to open to traffic this evening (Monday, November 10), weather permitting. This will extend the four-lane roadway known as the Southeast Connector from Peach Grove Avenue to Route 253 (Port Republic Road) near the Harrisonburg city limits.

These new sections of Route 280 were constructed by the Virginia Department of Transportation and a private developer. For VDOT’s 0.6-mile portion of the roadway, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $4.5 million contract to Perry Engineering Company Inc. in May 2013.

Rockingham County is building the final phase of the Southeast Connector from Route 253 to Route 33 east of Harrisonburg. Final completion is expected in spring 2015.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511 and at 511Virginia.org. For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Citizens can dial 1-800-FOR- ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.

The Staunton District Twitter feed is at @VaDOTStaunton. VDOT can be followed on Facebook, Flickr,Twitter and YouTube. RSS feeds are also available for statewide information. The VDOT Web page is located at www.VirginiaDOT.org.
