Nelson County, just over the mountain from my base in Waynesboro, has a rather qualified new local Democratic Party chair.
Paul Sullivan, a retiree who lives in Nellysford, was elected to the post this week, succeeding Connie Brennan.a former member of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors and the Nelson County School Board and UVA alum.
Real heavyweights running things over there.
I was the chair of the Democratic Party in Waynesboro for three years, 2008-2010, and I’m nobody.
Sullivan’s resume includes deployment in the Gulf War, a term as deputy secretary for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, a post as a project manager for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and volunteer stints with several Democratic campaigns, including the U.S. Senate campaign of Jim Webb, who upset George Allen in the 2006 cycle.
“The people in the United States need to resist the extreme and harmful policies of President Trump and the Republicans so our nation survives,” Sullivan said. “Simultaneously, voters are encouraged to vote Democratic, so our democracy thrives with policies benefiting everyone. As Nelson County committee chair, my primary objective will be to elect Democratic leaders with the character, integrity, ability, vision, and commitment to deliver results for all Virginians.’
