Update: Saturday, 1:52 p.m. Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg will undergo season-ending surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome in his pitching hand, manager Davey Martinez said Saturday.

Strasburg, 32, has been placed on the team’s 60-day injured list.

Right-hander Wil Crowe was called up by the Nats and will make his MLB debut when he starts Game 2 of today’s doubleheader with Miami.

Crowe was a second-round draft pick in 2017 who struggled in AAA last year, going 0-4 with a 6.17 ERA in Fresno, after going 11-0 with a 2.69 ERA in High-A Potomac in the Carolina League in 2018.

Original post: Friday, 4:56 p.m. World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg has carpal tunnel syndrome in his right hand, and may need season-ending surgery, the team announced Friday.

Strasburg (0-1, 10.80 ERA in two starts in 2020) was lifted from his last outing, a week ago in Baltimore, after just 16 pitches.

The righty had been noticeably flexing his right hand after pitches in both of his regular-season starts and his one summer camp start in 2020, but the team had indicated that the issue was a forearm strain until today.

No final decision has been made on Strasburg’s status, but it would seem to stand to reason that he should be shut down.

Strasburg signed a seven-year, $245 million deal in the offseason after having a career year in 2019, posting an 18-6 record with a 3.32 ERA in 33 starts in the regular season, then going 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA in the 2019 postseason, including notching two wins in the 2019 World Series.
