The National Weather Service is warning Virginians about an elevated threat for rapid fire conditions today.

According to a special weather statement, the combination of low humidity and gusty winds will result in a greater risk of adverse fire behavior and rapid fire spread through this afternoon.

The elevated threat includes: the counties of Augusta, Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, and Rockingham and the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Winchester and Luray.

Relative humidity values will drop 20 to 25 percent across most of the area this afternoon, with values of 15 to 20 percent in the Alleghenies.

Southeast to south winds around 10-15 miles per hour will gust between 20 to 25 miles per hour.

For the ridges, higher gusts up to 35 miles per hour are expected.

Temperatures this afternoon reach the 70s in most locations.

The National Weather Service Baltimore-Washington office recommends checking with local burn permitting authorities before burning anything outdoors today.
