Chris Graham

lynchburg hillcatsAnother tough loss for the Hillcats pushed their season-high losing streak to nine. Lynchburg gave up 10 runs in the first three innings on 13 hits and Carolina cruised to their ninth straight win, 11-1.

Carolina put three on the board in the first frame on the strength of four hits. Carlos Franco delivered the big blow with a two-run single. Jacob Schrader also picked up an RBI on a groundout.

The Mudcats made it 7-0 in the second with four more runs. Johan Camargo doubled and scored on a throwing error, Eric Garcia had an RBI single, and Franco collected his third and fourth RBIs on a two-run, line drive home run to right field.

Things got worse for the Hillcats in the third, when Carolina pushed their advantage to 10. Carmargo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Garcia had an RBI single on a ball that popped up on Nellie Rodriguez and forced him to be removed from the game, and Dustin Peterson drove in the tenth run with an infield single.

All was quiet until the eighth inning, as Antonio Romero made his first appearance for the Hillcats. He went 2.2 innings and didn’t allow a hit. He left after walking the bases loaded in the sixth, but Robbie Aviles finished the inning without allowing a run.

In the eighth, the teams exchanged runs. Lynchburg received an RBI double from Clint Frazier to right field and Carolina scored when Joey Meneses grounded into a bases loaded double play, scoring Garcia to put their lead back at 10, 11-1.

The Hillcats head to Wilmington to face the Blue Rocks in a four-game series from Friday to Monday. Fans can tune into those game on ESPN Radio Virginia 93.3 FM and 1320 AM. Friday night’s contest begins at 7:05 p.m. The Hillcats On-Deck Show will begin at 6:45 p.m.
