Mid-day road conditions: Traveling south to north in Valley takes you from ice to snow

winter weather snow icy roadsWinter precipitation continues throughout the Shenandoah Valley as mid-day approaches. Snow and ice can be found north of Shenandoah County and south of this region is mostly ice and freezing rain. Slushy driving conditions can be found through out the Valley area. Bridges, overpasses and ramps are reported in icy or snowy condition in many areas. Virginia Department of Transportation crews continue to treat roadways with chemicals and plow as needed.

All drivers are asked to use extreme caution and allow extra time to reach their destination. Always use seatbelts. Please check 511Virginia.org for road conditions and highway cameras.

Here are the road conditions as of 11:15 a.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

  • Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Augusta County. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties.
  • Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
  • Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge County.
  • Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Page and Clarke counties. Moderate and minor conditions in Shenandoah County. Minor conditions in Bath, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Warren and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties.
  • Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Warren, Clarke, Page, Shenandoah, Rockingham, and Augusta counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany County.

For winter weather road conditions go to http://www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions. In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.
