vmiWith the regular season coming to a close, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by an 8-1 score to host UNCG Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Keydets (0-16, 0-10) will open next Saturday’s first round of the SoCon Tournament at No.3-seeded Wofford College as the Terriers edged out UNCG for the spot. VMI enters the tourney as the No. 6 seed.
In the regular season finale against the Spartans, VMI got behind early in the game as UNCG earned a 4-0 lead before senior Alex Hartman trimmed the lead by a goal as he stole the ball and snuck it past the Spartan keeper for his first goal of the season.
The tally gave the Keydets some momentum heading into the half but was short-lived as UNCG added four more goals in the second half for the final score.
Hartman finished the matched with two shots while Chris Spates and David Wright each had one. Reserves Levi Harmon, Jackson Rowady and Jonathan Martinez also had a shot at the net.
In a complete game, VMI keeper Robert Allen picked up the loss but recorded a season-high 15 saves on the night as he was kept busy with UNCG firing 37 shot attempts.
Next Saturday’s tournament opener at Wofford will kick at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
