virginia soccerThe UVA men’s soccer team defeated Georgetown, 2-0, Saturday night in exhibition action at Klöckner Stadium. The contest was a matchup of preseason top-20 teams – Georgetown is No. 10 in the preseason NSCAA rankings, while UVA is No. 17.

Paddy Foss (Sr., South Riding, Va.) and Edward Opoku (So., Rye, N.Y.) scored for Virginia.

Georgetown out-shot Virginia, 15-12, with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. UVA took nine corner kicks, while Georgetown earned seven corners.

The teams played a scoreless first half, although Georgetown jumped out fast and hit the crossbar in the opening minute of the game. UVA broke the stalemate in the 55th minute after Georgetown committed a foul in the box. Foss took the penalty kick but was denied by JT Marcinkowski, but Foss collected the rebound and tapped it home for the goal.

UVA added a goal in the 69th minute as Sheldon Sullivan (R-Jr., Stafford, Va.) slid a pass near the goal line and under the diving goalkeeper to connect with Opoku, who easily scored.
