Man who ran into traffic on Interstate 81 seriously injured

interstate 81A man who reportedly ran into traffic on Interstate 81 in Frederick County Thursday morning was seriously injured.

Darius B. Degree, 22, of Hamilton, Va., was transported to Winchester Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The crash was reported at 5:35 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 81 at the 308.6 mile marker.

A 2006 Saturn VUE was traveling south on Interstate 81, when a male pedestrian, Degree, suddenly ran into the southbound travel lanes. The Saturn was unable to avoid striking the man.

The Saturn immediately stopped at the scene and its driver, a 31-year-old Connecticut man, was not injured.

No charges have been placed.

The crash remains under investigation.

Virginia State Police was assisted by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and Frederick County Fire and EMS.
