Lumos Networks introduces Colocation as first Data Center Services product

Lumos Networks (NASDAQ: LMOS), a leading provider of fiber-based services  across the Mid-Atlantic region, today introduced Colocation as the first product in the Lumos Networks Data Center Services portfolio.  Colocation services provide a secure environment for customers’ servers and data storage, enabling them to reduce risks such as security breaches, fire and flood.

“Through Colocation services, Lumos Networks is meeting a growing need in the areas of data center services and cloud computing.  We are expanding services to complement the data products our customers are demanding, such as Metro-Ethernet, MPLS, and dedicated Internet services.  Colocation reduces capital expenses for space, power and cooling systems.  It provides flexibility when deciding where customers place their servers for the best disaster recovery strategies.  This enhancement also expands our portfolio of products to increase revenues and value for our shareholders,” said Vice President of Product Management and Engineering Craig M. Drinkhall.

Customers prefer not to duplicate the entire infrastructure that is required to establish a redundant data center.  “Few businesses can afford the extensive capital expense necessary to build complete redundancy.  Our Colocation solution provides a dedicated space with power, cooling and secure access coordinated by Lumos Networks, where customers can locate their servers for a very predictable monthly cost,” Drinkhall adds. “Lumos Networks’ Colocation offers choices in rack size, power options, and geographic locations served by the extensive Lumos Networks fiber optic network.”

Colocation is attractive to a variety of customers from small businesses to large enterprises. In some cases it is because they have insufficient space, power and cooling to add new servers and storage. For others it is the need for redundancy afforded by geographically dispersed systems.

“Some customers have specifically asked to place their servers many miles and several hours  away while others wish to have access within an hour or so drive.  With colocation sites in six cities in Virginia and West Virginia, customers will now have a number of options,” said Drinkhall.
