The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team was handed its first-ever loss in the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) since the league’s inception in 2009 with an 18-10 decision at Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel) scored a team-high three goals on four shots, adding two ground balls and one draw control.

Though Longwood (8-4) opened and closed the game with two goals, along with scoring the first goal in the second half, Jacksonville rallied a 12-goal second period to clinch the victory after only leading by two (6-4) at the intermission. Between the 20:29 mark and 12:28 remaining to be played, the Dolphins scored nine goals in a row, adding to the most goals allowed by Longwood since the squad’s last loss of the season at home against Richmond (24-14, 3.16).

“We were just outplayed in every category,” said head coach Missy Ackerman. “Jacksonville came out strong and we just did not have enough depth. It was a disappointing performance from a number of people, and we plan on seeing them (Jacksonville) again.”

Longwood conceded 24 turnovers, second-most on the season and also lost the battle in shots 43-20, ground balls 25-24 and caused turnovers 13-5. Furthermore, the Lancers were charged with 22 fouls to the Dolphins 15, but they did win more draw controls (17-13), led by freshman Mary Barondess|Centreville (Westfield) with a game-high of eight. The freshman also has a team-high 56 so far in 2011

Senior Juli Liebig|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) made 13 saves in 60 minutes of action, just two short of her season-high.
