Virginia (26-4, 14-3 ACC) faces a Virginia Tech team (19-11, 8-9 ACC) playing for its NCAA Tournament future.

Tip is in the noon ET quarter-hour; the game is being broadcast on The CW.

Tech won the first matchup between the two this season, 95-85 in three OTs, way back on Dec. 31.

The Hokies would benefit from what would be a Quad 1 win today; they’re very much on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble at the moment.

Virginia is playing to keep its momentum, and to maintain its positioning as a Top 4 NCAA Tournament seed.

Game coverage

Virginia Tech timeout: Virginia 9-0, 18:05/1st

UVA makes three of its first four, two threes, offensive rebound kickout.

Media timeout: Virginia 14-3, 15:39/1st

Tech is 1-of-5 with three turnovers on its first eight possessions.

Haven’t seen this level of Virginia defense in a while.

Media timeout: Virginia 22-11, 11:09/1st

Tech on a modest 6-0 run; they’ve made their last four shots, two paint twos, and two layups.

Need to clean that up.

Virginia: 5-of-8 3FG, 2-of-3 at the rim, 1-of-3 on paint twos.

Media timeout: Virginia 25-18, 7:42/1st

Tech now on a 13-3 run; Virginia has made one of its last six shots.

Tech has made six of its last eight. Five layups and paint twos. The midrange shot was a 10-footer; might as well have been a paint two.

The game has obviously stabilized.

Media timeout: Virginia 31-23, 3:21/1st

Impressed with how Tech got back into this one.

As was the case the first time out, it’s Ben Hammond: 11 points (4-of-7 FG, 1-of-3 3FG, 2-of-2 FT).

His three makes from two are layups.

Half: Virginia 41, Virginia Tech 25

That escalated quickly: UVA closed on a 12-2 run in the last 5:08.

Tech in that last 5:08: 1-of-6 from the field, five turnovers.

Virginia shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field and was 6-of-13 from three.

Got to the rim well, too: 8-of-13.

Tech: 10-of-27 FG, 2-of-14 3FG, 3-of-4 at the rim.

Update: Fridge situation

The home office fridge: not locked.

Thus, able to retrieve a soda.

Virginia timeout: Virginia 46-38, 16:21/2nd

Tech opens on a 13-5 run; 5-of-6 FG, 3-of-3 3FG.

Virginia is 2-of-3 FG, 1-of-1 3FG, but has two turnovers.

Media timeout: Virginia 51-49, 11:36/2nd

Tech is playing this one like their NCAA hopes are on the line, which they are.

Virginia: 4-of-10 FG, six turnovers in the second half.

Chance Mallory has sucked: two turnovers, one a live-ball TO that led to a bucket, and he allowed a Hammond blowby.

Media timeout: Virginia 57-51, 7:55/2nd

Modest 6-0 UVA run, all the makes in the paint.

Tech hasn’t made a bucket for 4:24.

Media timeout: Virginia 65-61, 2:54/2nd

Virginia had the lead back up to nine, an open three to get to 12.

Credit to Tech for hanging around.

This game is anybody’s.

Mallory usually plays the final three minutes; I’d sit him here.

His plus/minus for the game is -6.

Final: Virginia 76, Virginia Tech 72

Virginia led by nine with 50 seconds to go, but had to make a free throw with 4.4 seconds left to salt away a 76-72 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
