There was a lot to like for Liberty in the 41-24 season-opening win over Campbell at Williams Stadium.

What you wouldn’t like: the 24 points allowed, the 11 penalties, for 127 yards, the turnover that led to a Campbell second-quarter touchdown.

The flip side: the Flames put up 533 yards of total offense, Kaidon Salter was 16-of-23 passing for 242 yards and two TDs, and had 48 yards on the ground, Quinton Cooley had 110 yards rushing on 16 carries and a score, Treon Sibley had 109 yards on five catches and a score.

But this one was still a game into the fourth quarter. A Mark Biggins 1-yard TD run got the Camels to within 27-17 with 3:04 left in the third.

Liberty finally pulled away with back-to-back scores in the fourth – a Billy Lucas 5-yard run, capping a 14-play, 92-yard drive, and a Ryan Burger 6-yard run with 4:10 to go that made it 41-17.

Next up for Liberty: a road trip to New Mexico State, in a matchup of the two teams that played in the Conference USA Championship Game in 2023.
