Local residents can build on this great example of environmental stewardship by undertaking their own projects to improve local waters and their own land by building rain gardens, planting tree and shrub buffers adjacent to streams and ponds and increasing the number and variety of native plants. Diversifying our home landscapes with native plants provides pollen, nectar and habitat for pollinators, while attracting songbirds into our yards.
With this project the City of Staunton is leading by example to promote clean water. Homeowners can keep up the momentum with river-friendly landscaping practices. Collectively, we can all contribute to improving the health of our creeks, streams and rivers.
