LEARN seeks tutors to help others gain literacy skills

newspaper-headerLEARN (Learn English and Reading Now), the nonprofit organization that provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for adults in basic reading and writing – and in English for Speakers of Other Languages – in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County, is seeking  volunteer tutors to participate in its next training session on Saturday, March 16, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship located at 565 Pine Avenue in Waynesboro.

A community partner of the United Way of Greater Augusta, LEARN cites some startling statistics to underscore its continuing need for tutors: 28% of area residents don’t have a high school diploma and 12% are lacking in basic literacy skills.

“Judging by our waiting list of people seeking tutors, there’s an increasing number of local residents who hail from other countries that want to learn English,” states LEARN Program Coordinator Liz Williams.  “Along with a solid command of the English language, our tutors are asked to be 18 years of age or older, as well as patient, flexible, well-organized, non-judgmental and committed to helping others.”

LEARN tutors must complete a seven-hour training session (with some advance preparation) and then be available to tutor about eight hours each month … plus planning time.  Tutors meet weekly with their clients in public places and are asked to make at least a one-year commitment to the program.

“Please call our office in Fishersville – 540-245-5136 – on Tuesday or Thursday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to talk with me and learn more about becoming a LEARN tutor,” says Williams.  “Our next tutor training session will be held on Saturday, March 16th, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship: 565 Pine Avenue in Waynesboro.”

In addition to helping others gain literacy skills in English through community service, LEARN tutors are often excited about an opportunity to meet new people and learn more about other cultures.
