Kyle Guy declares for NBA Draft, leaves open option of returning to Virginia

Zachary Pereles

Virginia junior shooting guard Kyle Guy has declared for the NBA Draft but left open the chance of his return, he announced on social media Tuesday afternoon.

In one of the key lines, Guy wrote,  “I am diving in to [sic] this with two feet to achieve my dream but I will leave the option of coming back to school open.”

Guy won the Final Four Most Outstanding Player honor after helping lead Virginia to a national title. He averaged a team-best 15.4 points per game as well as 4.5 rebounds. He shot 44.9 percent from the floor and 42.6 percent from three this season.

Guy struggled early on in the NCAA Tournament but really turned it on starting in the Elite Eight against Purdue, when he scored 25 points and splashed five three-pointers. He had 15 points — including three free throws with 0.6 seconds left — to help Virginia beat Auburn in the Final Four, and he scored 24 against Texas Tech in the national championship game.

Guy joins De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome as those who have declared for the NBA Draft early from Virginia. A 6-foot-2 shooting guard, Guy’s three-point-shooting ability is what stands out most in his draft profile. He also emerged as a very good defender who rarely fouled this season. Guy is projected as a late-second-round pick, and his entry into the NBA Draft process will likely give him a clearer picture as to whether he should remain in the draft, which is June 20, or return for another year of development.
