Kroger 343 Donation to BR Food Bank smKroger’s Mid-Atlantic division today presented the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank with more than $30,000.

Kroger is donating $5,000 of the total for a new refrigerated trailer for the Food Bank to pick up and deliver food to soup kitchens, shelters and food pantries in its area.  Blue Ridge Food Bank distributes approximately 24 million pounds of food annually–more than 20 million meals.

The remaining $25,522 goes directly to the Food Bank’s hunger relief program and comes from Kroger’s Bringing Hope to the Table program and the generosity of customers who give $1 or $5 when they check out at Kroger stores in the area.

“Our Bringing Hope to the Table program is a campaign that includes associates and customers in a major effort to feed our hungry neighbors in the communities we serve in western and central Virginia,” said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic division.  “Kroger is engaged in the fight against hunger all year long and has a history of 30 years of support for local food banks.”

Amy Irvine, manager of Kroger’s Staunton store, today presented a check for $30,522.25 to Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

“Kroger is a valuable partner of the Food Bank and supports us when we have a critical need such as a new trailer and in our everyday efforts to feed the hungry all year long,” said McKee.  “Kroger is demonstrating the difference a company makes when there is a commitment to meet a need in a community.”

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is an emergency food assistance agency serving more than 114,000 people a month in 25 counties and nine cities on either side of the Blue Ridge with distribution centers in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Winchester and Verona.

The Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger agency.  Kroger is a founding partner of Feeding America.
