Justin Turk to bring mix of music styles to Gateway

Justin Turk, age 7, was hearing it from his dad.

“He was egging me on,” said Turk, who will be performing songs from his new CD, “Right Here, Right Now,” at the WTA’s Gateway on Saturday night.

But we’re telling a story about when he was 7, and his dad was pestering him to perform karaoke for his family after dinner at a restaurant.

Turk ended up singing a song a capella and brought down the house. The 7-year-old got his first standing ovation.

“That’s when I knew that music was what I wanted to do,” said Turk, who played in emo and post-hardcore bands before going solo three years ago.

For a guy with his feet in the modern music scene, you might be interested to learn that he cites as a key musical influence The Beatles.

“They were my favorite band, my biggest influence. When I started my solo career, they were the biggest influence for me for my solo music,” said Turk, whose eclectic style also incorporates country, Southern rock and classic rock.
