John A. McGowan, M.D. has been named president and chief executive officer of the RMH Medical Group and has joined the RMH Healthcare senior leadership team.

The RMH Medical Group is a subsidiary company within RMH Healthcare designed to align and integrate RMH’s employed physicians and provide selected services to the medical community. It is comprised of approximately 60 RMH-employed physicians. As president and CEO, Dr. McGowan is accountable for overseeing this multi-specialty practice. He also will serve as chair of the Board of Directors of the Medical Group and be accountable to RMH Healthcare president and CEO Jim Krauss.

“I am delighted that John has accepted this position,” said Krauss. “He has earned his peers’ respect with his medical acumen, personal values and leadership abilities. Assuring access to and integration of quality medical care is critical to our health system’s mission, and his leadership and strategic skills will benefit not only the Medical Group, but also the hospital, the medical staff and our community.”

Krauss noted that formation of the RMH Medical Group is a key milestone in RMH’s journey toward creating an integrated healthcare delivery system. “The Medical Group is designed to position physicians in leadership roles in the organization and further align these physicians with the mission, vision and values of RMH,” he explained.

Dr. McGowan joined the RMH Medical Staff in 1987. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. His diverse leadership experience includes six years as an RMH Medical Staff leader, serving on the Medical Executive Committee (secretary, vice chairman, and chairman) and as president of the RMH Medical Staff; 20 years of leadership positions with Harrisonburg Medical Associates (including managing partner, chairman of the board and president); and over 12 years in leadership roles with RMH partner Valley Health Plan.

“I am excited to be working with the dedicated physicians and other providers currently employed by RMH and with the RMH senior leadership team,” Dr. McGowan said. “The Medical Group will be an innovative force in RMH Healthcare. The Group’s goal will be to develop a physician-driven, patient-centered service that delivers quality medical care.”

Dr. McGowan and his wife, Beverly, live in Harrisonburg. They have three grown children—Sean, Kevin and Catherine.
