JMU’s Kirby Burkholder collects third CAA Player of the Week accolade

James Madison senior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Monday afternoon. It is the third time this season Burkholder has collected the honor and the fifth time a JMU player has been recognized.

jmu logoBurkholder led the Dukes to a 56-33 win over Ohio in their opening game of the JMU Invitational on Sunday. The Preseason CAA Player of the Year had her fifth double-double of the season, leading all players with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also handed out four assists while surpassing 1,200 points in her career. Twelve of her 14 rebounds were snagged on the defensive end of the court. She shot 5-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

This season, Burkholder ranks first in the league in scoring (17.8 points per game) and third in rebounding (8.5 per game). She also has 24 assists, 16 steals and four blocks while shooting 34.1 percent from 3-point range.

William & Mary’s Marlena Tremba joined Burkhodler on the weekly awards list, garnering Rookie of the Week’s accolades.

The Dukes face Norfolk State at 2:30 p.m. in the championship game of the JMU Invitational presented by Fairfield Inn on Monday before venturing to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Jan. 2 for a 2 p.m. game with No. 10 North Carolina.
