JMU softball finishes regular season on 35-game winning streak

jmu logoA no-hit effort by freshman Megan Good in the opener and back-to-back home runs by Erica Field and Good in the nightcap led No. 19/20 James Madison to a Colonial Athletic Association softball sweep against Drexel, 9-0 and 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes extended the nation’s longest win streak to 35 games, improving to 44-6 on the year and finished unbeaten for the first time in CAA play with a 19-0 mark.

The Dragons’ season came to an end with a 19-23 overall record and 6-13 mark in the CAA.

JMU hit .404 as a team in the doubleheader while limiting Drexel to a .122 batting average.

Field went 4-for-6 with her eighth home run and three RBIs. Field entered the day with a JMU-record-tying 71 hits on the season and came out with a record 75, which leads the CAA. Freshman infielder Morgan Tolle was 3-for-5 with a RBI and run, while sophomore outfielder Taylor Newton hit 3-for-6 with a RBI and two runs. Junior Jailyn Ford also homered for the Dukes and surpassed 600 career strikeouts.

Good notched her second consecutive no-hitter against a CAA foe.  Only one batter reached base in the run-rule, five-inning game, and that was on an error.

Top-seeded JMU opens CAA Tournament play Wednesday, May 6, at noon against fourth-seeded Towson.  The four-team, double-elimination tournament takes place at JMU’s Veterans Memorial Park.
