Four James Madison pitchers combined to limit Northeastern to six hits in a 5-0 shutout to open a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series Thursday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
JMU improved to a season-best 18 games over .500 at 35-17. The Dukes also won their eighth consecutive CAA game to improve to 19-9 in the league. It is the team’s longest conference winning streak since sweeping three straight series to open the 2006 slate. Northeastern dropped to 18-31 overall and 12-16 in the CAA.
The shutout was the first in 88 games by JMU dating back to a 10-0 win over Towson on March 21 in the 2010 season. The Dukes have allowed one run in the last 20 innings overall.
Redshirt junior Sean Tierney (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) improved to 9-1 overall after four innings allowing one hit. Junior Evan Scott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) followed with one inning. Senior left-hander James Weiner (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) threw 1 1/3 without allowing a hit, and junior Josh Futter (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) finished with 2 2/3 innings.
JMU sophomore first baseman Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had two hits with his 10th double, a walk, run and RBI to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Senior shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and freshman third baseman Conner Brown (Richmond, Va./Godwin) each had two of JMU’s eight hits.
Les Williams took the loss for the Huskies to fall to 5-6. He allowed all five runs, four earned, on eight hits in seven innings while striking out nine. Catcher John Puttress had two of the six NU hits.
Game two of the series will be Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
