State News: Chopra named to White House post, posted Monday, 9:30 a.m.

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner released a joint statement praising President Barack Obama’s appointment of Virginia Technology Secretary Aneesh Chopra to serve as the nation’s first Chief Technology Officer. The announcement was made during the president’s weekly Internet and radio address on Saturday.

“Secretary Chopra’s spirit of innovation has played a key role in Virginia’s continued ranking as a top-performing state, including the launch of Virginia’s Productivity Investment Fund which catalyzed promising ideas to lower costs and improve outcomes,” said Gov. Kaine. “His leadership on the role of technology to transform our healthcare and educational systems directly aligns with President Obama’s top priorities.”

“Virginia was the first state to establish a cabinet-level technology position with a focus on promoting high-wage, high-tech jobs and leveraging technology for more cost-efficient delivery of government services,” Sen. Warner said. “I also worked closely with Secretary Chopra on Virginia’s effort to expand rural broadband access so that no region is left behind in a global economy. I applaud President Obama for demonstrating leadership in recognizing the importance of technology in our national policy dialogue.”

Sen. Warner appointed Secretary Chopra to several boards during his term as Virginia governor, including the Southern Technology Council, the Board of Medical Assistance Services, and the Electronic Health Records Task Force. Gov. Kaine appointed Chopra Secretary of Technology in December of 2005.

Event: Items from missionary on display at Bridgewater College, posted Monday, 9:30 a.m.

Artifacts from a local woman’s 22-year career as a Brethren missionary-nurse to India will go on display in Bridgewater College’s Reuel B. Pritchett Museum beginning April 24. The items will form a part of an existing exhibit celebrating 300 years of Brethren history and its journey to Bridgewater.

Louise Sayre Vakil, a 1959 graduate of Bridgewater College and current Bridgewater resident, worked from 1950-1972 as a nurse in India, where she trained Indian nurses and delivered or helped deliver some 6,000 babies. In 2008, Vakil donated to the college 27 items she collected in India and many photographs.

“A Journey from Schwarzenau to Bridgewater: Celebrating 300 Years of Brethren History, 1708-2008,” focuses on the history of the Church of the Brethren from its founding in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany to Bridgewater College. The exhibit will feature artifacts, photographs, documents and books from the Pritchett Museum and Special Collections in BC’s Alexander Mack Memorial Library.

After the exhibit’s conclusion at the end of May, the Vakil items will become part of a large collection of artifacts donated to the college by Brethren missionaries throughout the years.

The entire exhibit, including the Vakil items, is open Monday through Friday from 1-4:30 p.m., and is free of charge. For further information, call Dale Harter at 540.828.5457.
