Virginia got a stellar effort from its beleaguered defense, but on Saturday couldn’t get anything going offensively in a 16-10 home loss to Wake Forest.
The loss was the sixth in a row for Virginia (2-6, 0-4 ACC), and fourth in a row in which the Cavs significantly outgained their opponents in total offense.
Turnovers and poor special-teams play again doomed UVa., whose final chance at a comeback ended with 1:52 to go when punt returner Khalek Shephard muffed a punt near midfield that was recovered by Wake Forest to seal the game.
The Cavs also had two fourth-quarter drives peter out in Wake Forest territory.
Phillip Sims went all the way at quarterback for Virginia, completing 22 of his 39 pass attempts for 253 yards and one touchdown. A fourth-quarter interception in the end zone proved costly for the Cavs, who enter a bye week this weekend before finishing up with N.C. State, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia Tech, all of whom are likely to go into the games down the stretch as favorites.
The UVa. running game never could get untracked, gaining just 48 yards on 32 carries against a Demon Deacon defense that had been giving up more than 200 yards a game on the ground coming in.
