Down by two runs entering the ninth inning the Lynchburg Hillcats rallied for five runs in the frame for a come-from-behind 6-3 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field. The comeback win completes a four-game sweep in the final meeting of the 2013 regular season between the two clubs. Josh Elander hit a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the ninth to cap the comeback. The Hillcats have now won a season-best six straight game.
Will Lamb walked three straight Hillcats (27-28, 63-61) to load the bases in the top of the ninth before getting pulled for Ryan Harvey, who immediately surrendered an RBI-single to Landoni and, with the bases still loaded, a wild pitch allowed Daniel Castro to score the tying run. Then with two outs in the inning Elander hit an opposite field double off the wall to clear the bases.
Lynchburg struck first with a run in the second inning. Elander singled before two passed balls and a wild pitch allowed him to score without another Hillcat’s help and put them up 1-0 through an inning and a half.
Myrtle Beach (33-25, 63-54) responded in the home half, tying the game with an RBI-double by Hanser Alberto. The Pelicans didn’t have an extra base hit in the shutout loss on Monday but used three RBI doubles to plate all their runsTuesday night. They got the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning on two-baggers from Trever Adams and Pat Cantwell.
All three runs came off starter Jarett Miller who allowed the three runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. A.J. Holland (5-9) made his first relief appearance of the season and delivered three scoreless innings for the win. Lamb (5-1) took the loss. Nate Hyatt retired the side in order in the ninth for his twelfth save of the year.
The Hillcats look to make it seven-in-a-row on Wednesday when they start a four-game, three-day series with the Carolina Mudcats. Two seven-inning contests are on tap for Wednesday with game one of the doubleheader starting at 5pm in Zebulon, North Carolina. Williams Perez (5-1, 2.23) gets the start in game one for Lynchburg against Shawn Morimando (8-11, 3.12) for the Mudcats. Game two will feature Ryan Weber (6-4, 3.38) for the ‘Cats.
