Hillary Clinton praises Richmond for expanding access to police body cameras

hillary clintonThis week, the city of Richmond launched a pilot program to provide police officers with body cameras. Hillary Clinton released the following statement in support of the program:

“I was heartened to see Richmond put a pilot program into action this week to equip police officers with body cameras, which will improve transparency and help strengthen trust between law enforcement and the local community. Body cameras are by no means a panacea for the challenges we face in our criminal justice system, but they will help to increase accountability and transparency on both sides of the lens. As President, I will ensure that every police department in the country has access to body cameras as we work to fix the inequities in our criminal justice system.”

In addition to calling for federal support to make body cameras more accessible, Hillary Clinton has called for other criminal justice reforms, including strengthening the Department of Justice’s pattern or practice unit, doubling funding for the Department’s “Collaborative Reform” program, making new investments to support state-of-the-art law enforcement training, and supporting legislation to end racial profiling by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

More details on her proposals to reform the criminal justice system can be found here.
