Charges are pending in a crash that killed a 6-year-old boy on Interstate 64 in Henrico County Sunday night.
The child’s identity has not been released.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at 8:18 p.m. on I-64 eastbound near the 195 mile marker when a vehicle lost control, spun in the roadway and struck the center guardrail, according to Virginia State Police.
A second vehicle traveling behind the first attempted to avoid the initial crash, but the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the interstate, through a guardrail and down an embankment before coming to rest against a tree.
The deceased child was seated in the rear of the second vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt. He was partially ejected through the rear passenger-side window.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured at the time of the crash.
The condition of the driver of the first vehicle was not provided.
The preliminary investigation determined the driver’s use of a cell phone may have been the cause of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
Charges are pending with the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
