Junior left-hander James Ziemba of Duke University tossed a five-inning no-hitter as Harrisonburg edged Winchester 1-0 in a rain-shortened Valley Baseball League game Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Harrisonburg won its sixth straight and improved to 12-5. Winchester fell to 7-12
Ziemba (1-0) struck out one and walked two and every other out came on a groundball.
The Turks took a tidy 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Jesse Baker (Texas San Antonio) sacrifice fly. Shane Billings (Wingate) led off the Harrisonburg first with a double to right-center and moved to third on a groundout to second base by Tripp Shelton (UNC Greensboro).
The game was called after a 40-minute delay with the anticipation of continued rain.
The Turks play at Woodstock Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is Sunday vs. Charles Town, also at 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s game is Youth Group Night with area youth groups gaining free admission with their pastor.
