The Harrisburg Senators (42-43) upended the Richmond Flying Squirrels (43-39), 2-1, in 13 innings on Tuesday night at The Diamond. It was the second time the two teams have played 13 innings in the last week. Harrisburg has claimed both ballgames.
Richmond right-hander Edwin Quirarte gave the Squirrels all they hoped for and then some in a spot-start. He tossed a career-high six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits. He walked none and struck out six. However, he did not factor in the decision.
Harrisburg righty Austin Voth matched Quirarte every step of the way, and did him an inning better. Voth did not factor in the decisioin despite turning in seven sterling innings. He blanked the Squirrels on just two hits, walked none and struck out seven.
The Senators broke the stalemate in the eighth, plating an unearned run against right-hander Stephen Johnson. Isaac Ballou opened the inning with a single to right-center field. Myles Schroder misplayed the ball in center, and Ballou took second base on the error. Ballou was bunted to third and scored when Jose Lozada lifted a sacrifice-fly to left field.
Richmond answered in the bottom of the eighth against righty Erik Davis. Devin Harris led off and lined a single to right-center field. Austin Slater followed and crunched a double off the wall in left-center field. Harris sprinted around from first base to tie the game, 1-1.
Lefty Braulio Lara handled a scoreless ninth inning and fellow lefty Phil McCormick handled the 10th and 11th. Right-hander Jose Casilla then worked the 12th. Casilla returned for the 13th and the Senators broke the tie. Derrick Robinson started the inning with a bunt-single. Casilla threw wildly on the play, and his two-base error set up Robinson at third base. A batter later, Chris Bostick lifted a sacrifice-fly to right field. Casilla (2-4) took the loss for the Squirrels.
Right-hander Sam Runion (3-0) earned the win in relief. He threw two scoreless innings, stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Richmond LHP Kelvin Marte (7-1, 2.39) will make the start against Harrisburg RHP Colin Bates (3-0, 3.65).
