Original story, posted Sept. 23, 11:20 p.m.

A shooting on Interstate 295 tonight led to a fiery crash that killed the driver of a Ford F-250 pickup truck in Hanover County.

Virginia State Police report the shooting and subsequent single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m., just north of exit 38, Pole Green Road.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the southbound lanes of I-295 are currently closed. Detours have been set up by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Traffic is being diverted to exit 41A for Route 301, according to VDOT. Closure is anticipated overnight and possibly into the early morning commute.

The pickup truck ran off the road, crashed and caught fire after being fired upon by an unknown vehicle.

The driver of the truck, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police are working to confirm the identity of the deceased and notify next of kin.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call #77 from a cell phone or contact the Virginia State Police Richmond Division at (804) 750-8758.
