The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced long-term detours after two roads flooded when the Hyco River went over its banks in Halifax County.
VDOT crews are monitoring the road conditions near Lynchburg and will assess repairs once the water has receded.
According to VDOT, water from the Hyco River flooded Route 501, Huell Matthews Highway, near Route 96, Virgilina Road. The river also flooded a separate section of Route 96 nearby.
VDOT will share details as to when the roads can be reopened once that information becomes available.
Tropical depression Chantal was predicted to bring heavy rain to Virginia and the Carolinas this week.
AccuWeather has estimated damage to homes and businesses from Chantal at $4 billion to $6 billion in total damage and economic loss. Some areas received up to 10 inches of rain from the tropical storm.
Detours due to flooding, sinkholes
According to VDOT, these will be long-term closures:
- Take Route 58 east toward Sandy Fork, turn right onto Route 49. Continue on Route 49 into North Carolina to connect to Route 501 near Roxboro.
- Further west, Route 58 is closed between Route 119, Calvary Road, and Route 699, Wilkins Road, due to a sinkhole. The detour for this one also goes into North Carolina: Right on Route 119, cross N.C. state line, left on William Barker Road, left on Cunningham Road, continue on Route 699 back to Route 58.
