Goodlatte in position to block new gun control laws

AFP

bob-goodlatte2Sixth District Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte will be the chair of the House Judiciary Committee when Congress reconvenes in January. That’s the same House Judiciary Committee that will have oversight over any gun-control measures to be considered by Congress in the wake of the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that has sparked a new national debate on guns.

So, where does our congressman stand on the issue?

“We’re going to take a look at what happened there and what can be done to help avoid it in the future, but gun control is not going to be something that I would support,” Goodlatte told Roll Call for a story on gun-control legislation this week.

The congressman then walked that back a little in an email from his office to Roanoke TV station WSLS.

“We must take a close look at what happened last week. I will listen to and carefully review suggestions made by the president’s task force and other groups to see what we can do to prevent a terrible tragedy like this in the future,” the statement from Goodlatte read.
