Going on at Stone Soup

Every Friday night is music night at Stone Soup Books and Cafe in Downtown Waynesboro. “All the music is local roots music from this area. We have everything from celtic and bluegrass to oldtime music,” said owner Mary Katharine Froehlich.

This Saturday, August 14, will feature the first Saturday music jam at the bookstore/cafe. “It will be for anyone whether they are beginning musicians or advanced, it will be a truly organic version of music where they can learn new songs and get tips from the other musicians,” said Froehlich.

The jam session will be held every second Saturday until the whether does not permit such activities.

Gracing us with her presence this Friday night will be Alex Caton. Caton is an internationally acclaimed fiddler with a voice to match. She will be performing at Stone Soup from 6-9 p.m.

Reservations are advised because the outside seating is limited. There is no cover charge, but donations are graciously appreciated.

Although music is a big part of the Stone Soup Cafe portion, the book side of it has just as much going on. “We sponsor book discussions, like this summer we have been doing summer classics, because who wants to read Hemingway in the winter?” quipped Froehlich.

This fall there will be a discussion group that is “going global.” The group will be looking at three different parts of the world and reading a book from or about that place. They will be studying music, culture, women and food. For every different part of the world they look at, the group will be able to taste the food from that area.

The list of things to do does not end there. Stone Soup has hosted authors in the past and will be continuing to do so in the future. For example, one thing lined up is author of Touring the Shenandoah Valley Backroads, Andrea Sutcliffe, who will be at Stone Soup on Oct. 6 to do Lunch with the Author. Lunch and an autographed book are just the beginning, there will also be time for questions about the book and about the author with Sutccliffe herself.
