Game Notes: VMI Keydets head to Longwood, JMU for midweek action

vmi baseballVMI baseball returns to action for two midweek games, beginning with a game at Longwood Tuesday. First pitch in Farmville is set for 6 p.m. The Keydets then travel to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison the following night, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.

How to Follow

Fans can follow along with both games via live stats. In addition, a free JMU audio broadcast can be heard for Wednesday’sgame via the link within this article.

Probable Starting Pitchers

No pitchers have been announced by any of the teams.

Leadoff Hitters

The Keydets enter the midweek after taking the last two games from The Citadel over the weekend, thanks to 10 home runs over the two contests. It was the first time since 1989 that VMI had beaten The Citadel in a series in Lexington.

Perhaps the most promising of the 10 long balls was that of Collin Fleischer, who had missed time earlier in the season with an upper body injury, but hit his first long ball of the year in the Citadel series finale. It tied Fleischer for second in school history in home runs (37).

Matt Pita continued to hit the ball well last week as well, going 8 for 18 with three homers. Pita is now tied for the league lead in total bases, leads outright in double and ranks in the top five in eight different offensive categories.

This is an interesting stretch in the schedule for the Keydets, as VMI faces Longwood Tuesday, coached by former Keydet associate head coach Ryan Mau, before facing former VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry’s JMU Dukes on Wednesday. VMI head coach Jonathan Hadra was on staff with Mau and Ikenberry for just one season, 2010.

Next Time Out

The Keydets return to action Friday, opening a three-game conference series at ETSU. First pitch in Johnson City is set for 6:30 p.m.
