Game Notes: #9 UVA basketball hosts George Washington on Friday


uva basketballNo. 9 UVA hosts George Washington of the Atlantic 10 in non-conference action on Friday (Nov. 21). Tipoff at the John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7 p.m.

  • The Cavaliers have a six-game winning streak against George Washington.
  • Virginia won each of its first three games by at least 20 points for the first time since 2001-02.

Virginia-George Washington Series

Virginia is 25-23 all-time against George Washington in the series that dates back to the 1906-07 season. The Cavaliers meet the Colonials for the first time since March 17, 2004, when Virginia beat George Washington 79-66 in the first round of the NIT in Charlottesville. Virginia holds a 15-10 advantage over George Washington in 25 contests in Charlottesville.

Virginia Remains No. 9 in Latest AP Poll

  • UVa is ranked No. 9 in the latest Associated Press and USA Today coaches’ polls.
  • The Cavaliers were ranked No. 9/8 in the AP and USA Today preseason coaches’ polls.
  • The No. 9 AP preseason ranking was UVa’s best since a No. 1 ranking to start the 1982-83 season.
  • Virginia was ranked in the preseason rankings in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2000-01 and 2001-02.
  • UVa’s No. 3 final AP ranking last season marked its highest final ranking since 1982.

Justin Anderson and Malcolm Brogdon scored 17 points apiece to lead Virginia to a 75-55 non-conference win over South Carolina State on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

  • Anthony Gill added 11 points and tied for the team-high with rookie Isaiah Wilkins with eight rebounds, and Mike Tobey added 10 points and five rebounds.
  • UVa out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 46-26, and outscored SCSU, 40-14, in the paint.
  • The Cavaliers were 15-18 from the free-throw line, improving their season percentage to 75 percent after shooting 67 percent from the line last year.
