Ron Capps secured his record eighth victory at Bristol Dragway, ending a 33-race winless streak by defeating Paul Lee in the Funny Car final at the 24th annual Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.
This win makes Capps the all-time wins leader at the track, surpassing Tony Schumacher.
Other winners at the event, which was the eighth of 20 races in the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, included Steve Torrence in Top Fuel, Greg Anderson in Pro Stock, and Richard Gadson in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Capps, a three-time Funny Car world champion, clocked his best run of the weekend in the final round with a 3.957-second pass at 328.06 mph in his NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra. This marks his 77th career win and moves him to fourth in the Funny Car points standings. His previous victory was in Indianapolis in 2023.
“We’re a single-car team, and we can’t lean on other teams so it’s been a little more difficult,” Capps commented. “Even when we were struggling, I never once questioned Guido [crew chief Dean Antonelli]. I just knew we had to get better, and we stuck with the plan.”
In Top Fuel, four-time world champion Steve Torrence snapped a nearly year-long winless drought, defeating Justin Ashley in the final round with a 4.022-second run at 325.37 mph in his Capco Contractors dragster. This is Torrence’s second victory at Bristol Dragway, and he remains seventh in the Top Fuel standings.
Greg Anderson made history in Pro Stock, earning his 1,000th career round win in the semifinals before securing his fourth victory of the season. He defeated teammate Dallas Glenn in the final with a weekend-best 6.623-second run at 205.91 mph in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro.
Anderson now has 110 career wins, joining John Force as the only NHRA drivers with 1,000 round wins. He currently leads the Pro Stock points.
“This is pretty magical. I think I could call it a day and ride off into the sunset but I’m having too much damn fun right now,” Anderson stated.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Richard Gadson claimed his first career victory, taking a holeshot win over teammate Gaige Herrera in the final round. Gadson’s 6.884-second pass at 196.30 mph on his RevZilla/Mission Foods/Vance & Hines Suzuki, combined with a quick 0.014-second reaction time, was enough to overcome Herrera’s quicker 6.882-second run. Herrera maintains the points lead in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category.
