Former arms control negotiator to speak at Bridgewater College


bridgewaterJack Kangas, a former strategic planner and arms control negotiator with the Pentagon and the U.S. State Department, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

Kangas was a member of the U.S. delegation to both the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) in Geneva, Switzerland, during the presidential administrations of Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, respectively.

Kangas was the founder and first director of the Matthew B. Ridgway Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He has taught strategic studies and U.S. foreign policy at the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Helsinki, Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey and the Graduate Institute for International Studies in Geneva.

He served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and received the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal, the Defense Meritorious Civilian Medal and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award.

His current teaching and research interests are focused on the proliferation of nuclear weapons, nuclear terrorism and U.S. security policy in the Middle East, with specific reference to Turkey.

He earned an M.S. in economics and social science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University.

The event is free and open to the public.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college, located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
