Fork Union pulls away late, defeats Fishburne, 74-68

An Andrew Eudy jumper with 38 seconds left broke a 68-68 tie, and Fishburne couldn’t get the equalizer in the final minute as the Caissons fell to Fork Union, 74-68, at Alumni Memorial Gym in Waynesboro, Va., Wednesday night.

Fishburne (13-8) trailed by as many as nine in the second half before a 20-5 run over an 8:52 stretch gave the Caissons a 62-56 lead with 8:54 to go on a driving layup by Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio/Maryland-Eastern Shore).

Then the FMS offense got stagnant, getting just a single field goal in its next eight possessions spanning a 4:15 stretch, and Fork Union (12-3) clawed its way back into the game. A three-pointer by Steven Whitley with 5:14 left tied the game at 64.

Fishburne would take leads on free throws by Devenir Duruisseau (Palmdale, Calif./University of Washington) and a jumper by Jeremy Harris (Greensboro, N.C./Coastal Carolina), but the Harris field goal, at the 3:03 mark, would be the last time the Caissons would score.

After the Eudy jumper that broke the 68-all tie, Fishburne coach Ed Huckaby called a timeout to draw up a play, and on the possession Harris was fouled on an alley-oop dunk attempt with 25.0 seconds to go. Harris, who had a team-high 16 points on the night for the Caissons, missed both free throws, and Whitley was fouled on the rebound.

Whitley made his charity tosses to push the lead to 72-68. Huckaby called another timeout to set up a play, and Duruisseau missed a three from the right corner with 12.0 seconds left.

Whitley, who finished with a game-high 24 points, made two more free throws with 7.9 seconds left to seal the game for FUMA.
