Fishburne varsity basketball falls to Covenant

FMS newThe Fishburne varsity basketball team suffered its first loss of the season last night in Charlottesville, falling to Covenant 58-55 in overtime.

The Caissons came back from a 15-point forth quarter deficit to take a 3-point lead with 37 seconds left in regulation. The Eagles answered with a tying 3-point basket with 20 seconds left to force the game into overtime. Fishburne’s offence stagnated in the overtime period as the Caissons went down 6 points early, but fought their way back to a 2 point deficit before the late game foul ine march commenced, leaving the Caissons with a three point loss.

The Caissons were led by co-captain Kian Tate, a sophmore guard from Waynesboro, with 17 points. Junior guard Qua’Sean Napier and junior forward Treavor Norman, both from Waynesboro, added 15 and 10 points respectively. Senior forward Dominic Hollins of Ettick, VA chipped in with 7 points and junior forward Jordan Jake of Alexandria, VA rounded out Fishburne’s scoring efforts with 6. Sophmore guard Calen Owens of Fishersville provided tough defense for the Caissons off the bench.
Fishburne’s varsity team is now 3-1 and will host the 2014 Caissons Classic this Friday and Saturday, the 12 and 13. On Friday, the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon will face the Blue Devils of Fork Union at 4:30 and the Colonels of Massanutten will take on the hosting Caissons at 6:00. On Saturday, the Consolation game will be at 2:00 and the Championship game, followed by a short awards ceremony, starts at4:00. All games will be held in the FMS gym and admission is FREE.
