Fauquier County: Driver in fatal crash arrested, previously convicted for DUI

The driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian was located and arrested on Wednesday in Fauquier County.

Dennis D. Dunning, 54, of Catlett, was located at his residence in the 8000 block of Burwell Road and taken into custody without incident, according to Virginia State Police.

Dunning was charged with felony hit-and-run, involuntary manslaughter and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock.

The pedestrian, Garland J. Heddings, 73, of Catlett, died at the scene. Heddings was hit by two vehicles, according to VSP, and neither vehicle stopped. The crash occurred on Nov. 8 at 5:47 p.m. on Route 806.

According to online court records, Dunning faced previous charges dating back to 2002 in Prince William County for possession of marijuana, refusing a breath test, operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock and felony DUI.

Dunning was transported to the Fauquier Adult Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

The crash remains under investigation.
