A Fredericksburg man suffered serious injuries in a small plane crash in Fauquier County Thursday afternoon.

The pilot, a 79-year-old man, has not been identified.

He was flown to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police responded to a report of a downed plane in the 14500 block on Spring Mill Road at 3:27 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed a single-engine Cessna aircraft attempted to make an emergency landing in a field when it collided with several trees.

The pilot was the only occupant of the plane.

No one on the ground was injured as a result of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
