Two people are dead after a fatal crash on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County early Sunday morning.

The double fatal crash claimed the lives of both drivers involved in a head-on collision.

Tremayne D. Gross, 24, of Washington, D.C., and Meghan Elizabeth N. Mathis, 32, of Westminister, Md., both died at the scene.

The accident occurred at 2:34 a.m. in the express lanes of I-495 northbound near the 48-mile marker.

A Ford Edge, driven by Gross, was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes, when it struck a Jeep Patriot, driven by Mathis, head-on, according to Virginia State Police.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The crash remains under investigation.
