Excavator strikes overpass on Interstate 95 SB; testing structural integrity

An excavator struck an overpass on southbound Interstate 95 at the 83-mile marker in Henrico County this morning.

The debris from the strike led to additional crashes involving five vehicles, according to Virginia State Police.

No serious injuries have been reported.

Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation are on site assessing the structural integrity of the overpass and determining what repairs are needed.

Traffic in the area is experiencing significant delays as authorities work to clear the scene and ensure the roadway is safe for travel.

According to VSP, the crash occurred at 9:30 a.m.

Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and expect extended lane closures.

Traffic is being diverted to Interstate 295 and Parham Road .

The investigation is ongoing.
